There is no better way to get to know a neighborhood than to get out in it! Join me on running tours through some of Nashville’s most distinctive areas.
It’s almost impossible to find a picture of Martin and Chelsea not in motion. Both are avid endurance athletes and podium level triathletes.
They were settled into a small cottage in South Inglewood, but one thing was missing. They wanted to be closer — close enough to Five Points to meet up with their running group, close enough to bike to the Shelby Bottoms Greenway, close enough to walk to anything they needed during a snowstorm. For Chelsea, that also meant a quick bike ride Downtown to work.
Martin and Chelsea weren’t really in the market, but when the perfect home became available, they had to jump on it. The home they saw had even previously belonged to a triathlete and the “bike room” was already set up. In just a couple of days, we went from “not looking” to “under contract.” Now Martin and Chelsea couldn’t be happier. They’re closer to the things they love, and can spend more time chasing new personal records on the triathlon circuit and meeting up with friends.
They’re both much faster runners than I am, but agreed to slow it down and show me their favorite sites in and around the East Edgefield area of East Nashville. Here’s how it went:
Neighborhood Features
What do Martin and Chelsea love about East Edgefield?
Sidewalks everywhere! Feeling connected to their social center in a vibrant area of town. In their previous neighborhood they had to walk several blocks to get to a network of sidewalks
Passing by beautiful parks and stunning architecture every time they leave the house
Community! Running into friends and neighbors on almost every outing.
Walking to get groceries, dinner, even hardware. They feel like they could get everything the needed within walking distance if they wanted
Cool shopping, delicious breakfast places, and specialty shops - from bike repair to gourmet chocolate within a couple blocks. They’re still mapping out all the neighborhood happy hours
My favorite thing: Convenience! This location is absolutely perfect for active people who love both the outdoors and being minutes from the downtown and East Nashville social centers.
Unexpected surprise: The craft beer selection at the 4-Way Market at 14th and Fatherland.
Property Characteristics
Neighborhood boundaries in older neighborhoods aren’t always totally defined, as is the case with East Edgefield. These stats come from the area bordered by Shelby Avenue and Holly Street, between S 11th Street and S 14th Street. Is this the neighborhood for you?
Homes in the East Edgefield area date back to 1885, one designed by Hugh Cathcart Thompson, who designed the Ryman Auditorium, but also blend beautifully with new construction and condominiums
